Yesterday, at The Wilson in Cheltenham, I held a workshop organised by the Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen. My starting point was the 'paper-mosaicks' of (massively under-appreciated!) Mrs Delaney. We used papers from old newsprint and catalogues, attempting to match found colours and textures with the foliage and flowers I brought in. We worked directly with scissors and glue, deliberately avoiding pencil and paper. My aim was to encourage looking at the plants as blocks of colour, shadow and mass rather than outlines and 3D accuracy. I came up with the phrase 'drawing with scissors' to try and convey the immediacy of this approach.
We had some fantastic results.
